I used to own a car for more than 10 yrs. Threw in the towel in 2016. Don't be too fixated in owning a car. Even now price so high ppl still buy car. Imagine if everyone can afford a car, road will start to jam up. Come out carpark, jam start. Switch to bmw, taxi or car sharing.. govt will never lower its stance.

‪ The demand for cat A COE will remains due to car dealers clever marketing tactics. For example, BYD Atto 3 comes in 3 COE packages.

Saver at $154k non guarantee COE maximum 8 bids.

Base at $164k maximum 6 bids

Excite at $174k guarantee COE.

The catch is you must place a huge deposit of $16,350 to bid for COE refundable if the bids expire. This is more than DBS credit card allows at $10k. Imagine your money get stuck there for months!

Then some dealers like BYD and Tesla charge more for colour other than white which is FOC

So you can see from the OneMotoring website there are usually bids exceed quota because of the COE number of bid variants.

Now, as it move closer to the expiry of maximum bid, dealers will put pressure on you to top up for a guarantee COE! Do you have a choice if you need a car urgently?

Also, when you trade in your car to the dealer at a non guarantee COE, the price quoted valid at the time of the first bidding. For subsequent bidding, price will adjust if COE go down or up . This is like tikam tikam roulette.

My advice is go for non marketing gimmick dealers that quote you a fixed and higher price inclusive of COE for a piece of mind. Likely, these dealers will bid for you successfully like Kah motors, Komoco, Borneo motors, Cycles and carriage among others.

Don’t be fooled by guarantee and non guarantee maximum number of bids clause.
