The Editorial Choice for Motorist Car of the Year 2022!
Each of the COTY category winners was derived from a mixture of public opinion and a rigorous internal scoring system. The Editor’s Choice only focuses on the experiential aspect of these new cars.
In essence, the winners in this category are cars that created the most lasting impression on us. And trust me, with the number of cars us automotive journalists drive, this is something that is incredibly difficult to achieve.
Without further ado, here are the winners!
Electric Vehicle - Polestar 2 LRDM
Efficient, quiet yet ruthlessly quick when you want it to be, there can really be no other option for the best overall electric vehicle. In our hands, the car averaged 400 kilometres of range on a single charge,and this is despite some less than ideal conditions when we were testing the car. (We weren't driving it frugally too!)
It is well made, has sufficient room for a family of four, and makes for a really solid overall package if you are looking for an affordable premium saloon!
Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Vehicle - Audi A3 1.0 litre Sedan
The decision to create a Cat A version of Audi's entry-level saloon is one that has paid off. And massively, shall we add. The torsion beam suspension in the back, and a characterful 1.0 litre engine makes for a car that is vastly more entertaining to daily drive than it's 1.5 litre siblings.
As the cost savings were mechanical, the car still preserves the full fat Audi experience, so there isn't a sense that you are in a lower spec variant!
Hybrid Vehicle – Toyota Sienta and Kia Niro Hybrid (Tie)
Automotive giants Toyota and Kia are fighting the good fight by keeping the ICE alive through hybridisation, and we believe their latest petrol-hybrid vehicles are on equal footing when it comes to excellent value-for-money and well-rounded packaging.
Both the Sienta and Niro have been developed from the ground up to ensure best-in-class driving dynamics, commendable levels of practicality, and most importantly, extremely low running costs, and we can say with certainty that they’ve achieved them all. Couple those qualities with quirky yet lovable styling cues, and you’re looking at two very captivating options.
While the Toyota can accommodate seven and the Kia five, both are extremely spacious and are capable of bringing your loved ones around town in comfort and, dare we say, style!
