Malaysia’s long-anticipated Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system is finally rolling out, but not without causing confusion among Singapore drivers who drive to our northern neighbour. Despite the system requiring all foreign vehicles entering Malaysia to register for VEP, many Singapore drivers claim they haven’t received reminders or clear communication regarding its implementation.

What is the VEP?

The VEP is Malaysia's method of tracking and regulating Singapore-registered vehicles that enter the country. It was introduced to ensure that vehicles entering from Singapore are properly documented and compliant with Malaysian traffic rules.

While the plan for the VEP rollout has been in the pipeline for several years, its execution has left many drivers from Singapore scratching their heads. Unlike the previous road tax system, the VEP involves a unique RFID tag linked to each vehicle. This tag allows Malaysian authorities to monitor the entry and exit of foreign cars, preventing violations or unpaid fines.

Singaporean drivers have voiced concerns about the lack of reminders and updates regarding VEP registration. Many expected automatic notifications similar to Singapore’s road tax reminders. Without clear communication, there’s been confusion about deadlines and the need for VEP approval to avoid penalties.

Some drivers who have tried to register have reported delays or technical issues, adding to the overall frustration.

Lighter traffic at the Causeway

One unexpected side effect of the VEP rollout has been the apparent reduction of traffic at the Causeway. Many Singapore drivers without VEP registration for their vehicles seem hesitant to cross into Malaysia, either unaware of the new regulations or uncertain about their status under the VEP system.

Though this lighter traffic might be a relief for some, the long-term impact on cross-border travel and tourism remains to be seen.

It is timely for the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to review the regulations governing commercial vehicles entering Singapore. Firstly, the Traffic Act mandates that these vehicles be equipped with a speed-monitoring device installed by LTA-approved centers. Furthermore, regular inspections at Vehicle Testing Centers should verify emission reduction measures for these vehicles. Additionally, the Traffic Police should diligently enforce speed limits and monitor commercial vehicles utilizing fast lanes. Lastly, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) should enhance inspections of double-cab vehicles used for transporting goods and materials, ensuring adherence to regulations for goods vehicles.
