The Circuit Breaker was first introduced last Friday (3 April 2020), and it was announced that only businesses providing essential services can continue operations from 7 April 2020 to 4 May 2020.

Among the list of essential services, vehicle recovery and repair were included.

However, this brought about massive confusion. This was because it stated that these vehicular services were “for emergency vehicles only”.

Many were left confused, wondering if this applies to emergency vehicles like ambulances or emergency services for vehicles all-around.

According to a Facebook post by the Singapore Motor Workshop Association (SMWA), motor repair workshops can continue to operate and provide emergency vehicle services such vehicle recovery and repairs.

However, non-essential services such as car grooming, cosmetic-related works, and routine servicing are prohibited from this exemption.

Vehicle workshops that are eligible and intend to continue operations are required to apply for exemption at the GoBusiness COVID site by 13 April.

Amidst this uncertain time, SMWA’s committee is calling out members to exercise more caution. For instance, only having appointment-based arrangements, practicing personal hygiene and operating at minimum capacity.

Here at Motorist, we recommend users looking for emergency vehicular repairs to follow this advice.

Firstly, visit workshops only if it is the last resort. Otherwise, do abide by the Government’s guidelines to stay at home.

Secondly, check with your own workshop regarding their operating hours, and arrange for an appointment.

Lastly, minimise the usage of vehicles after these repairs. Stay indoors.

Alternatively, you can always schedule a visit to your workshop after 4 May when the situation improves.
