COVID-19: Grab and Gojek to Provide Drivers with Rental Discounts

Ride-hailing companies Grab and Gojek have announced that its drivers are set to receive partial waivers for their rentals over the following month due to COVID-19.
This comes after the announcement of stricter and more enhanced safe distancing measures from the Government. The “Circuit Breaker” will last from 7th April till 4th May.
Previously, ComfortDelGro also declared that they would waive Taxi rental fees for a month as well. Similarly, SMRT also agreed with identical measures.
Grab had also earlier announced that it partnered with the Land Transport Authority to allow drivers to support food and parcel delivery under the GrabExpress car pilot programme.
Under Grab’s new initiative, partners that rent cars from its fleet will get a 30 per cent rental waiver. This will be capped at S$20 a day. Additionally, there is also an option to defer 20 per cent of their rental cost (of up to S$14/day) for the next six months until October 2020.
Drivers renting from Grab’s fleet will also not be obliged to pay any commission, which will temporarily replace Grab’s incentive program for its drivers.
On the other hand, it is still relatively unclear for Gojek drivers. The company only mentioned that their eight fleet partners will waive vehicle rentals by up to 60 per cent during this period.
These new initiatives introduced are in a bid to help drivers tide past this difficult period. Demand for transport is expected to continue to dip significantly, as businesses offering non-essential services are required to work from home.
