ComfortDelGro will be waiving taxi rental fees for all drivers for one month to help them “tide over this incredibly difficult period”.

This “unprecedented move”, a first for the company, follows the announcement by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong that all non-essential workplaces are to close to curb the further spread of COVID-19.

According to a press release, the company will be waiving all taxi rentals from Tuesday, 7 April till 5 May 2020.

“With the closure of non-essential workplaces and schools, our cabbies are going to find it even more difficult to make ends meet,” said ConfortDelGro Taxi CEO Ang Wei Neng. “With the full rental waiver, any fare they pick up will go straight to their pockets. We hope that this will help them tide over this incredibly difficult period.”

“We want them to know that we are in this with them and we can pull through this together,” he added.

According to the company, this full rental waiver will cost them an additional $19 million, pushing them further into the red.

The full rental waiver will also replace the earlier announced extension of daily rental relief. However, the daily rental relief will kick back in after the full rental waiver expires on 5 May, and will run until September.

Together, both relief package and full rental waiver will cost the company up to $99 million.

In other COVID-19 news, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has decided to suspend Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) at most locations from 6 April 2020.

Industry watchers have also suggested all motor-related transactions, including COE bidding, should be put on hold or postponed.
