mReview: Xpeng G6 Pro AWD Performance – Gee-whiz Premium Auto With Snazzier Face And Crazier Pace

The Xpeng G6 has received a major update, which makes it an even better electric vehicle in the Singapore sports-utility context.
What’s Great
- Looks even more futuristic-fantastic with Xpeng’s “G6.5” professional facelift.
- High-“Performance” powertrain turns the G6 into a “Glee 6” super SUV, especially in a straight line, yet it remains easily controllable and fully comfortable.
- Sensible changes to the cabin make it even nicer and more relaxing for everybody on board, including pets, caraoke fans, and folks who appreciate a good in-car massage.
What’s Good
- Enough headroom and more than enough legroom for adult passengers in the rear despite the swoopy coupe-ish roofline.
- Well-sized boot and well-placed storage compartments provide the everyday utility expected of a mid-size SUV.
- The Xpilot automatic parking is arguably one of the best in the business so far.
What’s Not Great
- Driver’s seat squab could be a few centimetres longer and have some form of tilt adjustment to provide better support.
- Two-spoke steering wheel’s audio control cluster tends to be unintentionally touched/operated by a random right palm.
- Flappy covers for the sunvisor mirrors.
358kW Xpeng G6 provides electrifying acceleration, zipping from a standstill to a licence-losing 100km/h in 4.1 quick seconds and hitting just over 200km/h in theory.
Redesigned tailgate now sports a ducktail spoiler and a so-called suspended light-bar to make this view of the G6 more interesting to spectators and tailgaters.
Infotainment touchscreen has been slightly upsized to 15.6-inch for easier touching-and-seeing, while the climate control has been rationalised, with air-con vents now adjusted physically instead of digitally.
This is quite a lounge-on-20"-wheels; thanks to plenty of legroom even for the leggy, adequate airspace (for 1.73m me) between head hair and glass roof, luxurious Nappa leather upholstery (used to be less-plush vegan leather), and 12-angle seatback adjustment to vary your level of lounging.
G6 cargo capacity of 571 litres can be expanded to a moving-house 1,374 litres if needed, and there's a useful assortment of interior storage spaces for all the random items.
More torque (660Nm) than a Nissan GT-R Nismo enables the G6 AWD Performance to go like a battery-powered 2.2-tonne rocket on 255/45 R20 Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres, which lean towards outright grip and gladly pay the price in bump-thump.
Ventilated front seats now have a six-mode massage function too, with the newly-specified ambient lighting adding colour to this mobile "massage parlour", while the windscreen and front windows now have double-glazed glass for superior soundproofing.
"Hey Xpeng" voice-prompted assistant, Xpeng mobile app with Bluetooth "car key", multilingual Xcombo personalisation, and user-friendly Xpilot driving aids could make the owner feel like a member of Asian X-Men.
G6 Pro AWD Performance costs $30k more than its 218kW RWD Long Range sibling, with the premium only paying for the worthwhile extra energy in this case.
