mReview: Audi Q5 Sportback quattro – An Evolution Of Audi's Best-selling SUV

The all-new Audi Q5 Sportback is an evolution of Audi’s best-selling SUV globally and combines solid quality with comfort, built on a brand-new platform for the next era of petrol-powered motoring.
The latest Audi Q5 is the third iteration of the extremely popular SUV. It’s also the first SUV to be built upon Audi’s new PPC (Premium Platform Combustion), the same all-new, ICE-focused platform that the Audi A5 uses. So if you’re not ready to jump into the electric future just yet, not to worry, Audi is putting a big investment into making sure petrol power is not going the way of the dinosaurs yet.
The 2-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged heart of the new Audi Q5.
That, of course, means that the Audi Q5 has a combustion engine under the hood. In this case, the Q5 is powered by a 2-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged engine that puts out 204hp and 340Nm of torque, a bump in power compared to the previous-gen Q5. This new model will go from 0 to 100km/h in just over 7 seconds, and being an Audi, will be able to comfortably sit at its 226km/h V-max for as long as you dare.

The kicker with the powertrain is that it’s a mild-hybrid affair that helps to generate additional torque and reduce emissions and consumption. The 48-volt, 1.7kWh system also allows for minor driving under battery power, which is a neat feature to have on a mildly hybrid car.
As this is a Quattro model, power is sent to all four wheels through a 7-speed, dual-clutch gearbox. While our Q5 Sportback test car shares the same engine and mild-hybrid setup as all Q5 variants (bar the SQ5), there is also a non-Quattro Q5 SUV variant on offer.

Though the new Q5 range has already been refreshed visually, all Q5 Sportbacks in Singapore come standard with the S line exterior package for added style. The S line package includes larger front air intakes and a more pronounced rear diffuser for a sportier look.
Also offered as standard are Audi’s Matrix LED headlights with customisable digital light signatures, much like what we saw on the new A5 and Q6 e-tron. There are also optional OLED taillights for if you really want to up your swag levels.

On the revamped interior, the Q5’s rear cabin has decent legroom and more-than-adequate headroom, despite the sloping roofline of the Sportback bodystyle. However, as the Q5 does have a large central tunnel, there is quite the hump in the middle, which does eat into your foot room and make it a bit less comfortable for the person sitting in the middle seat. On the plus side, thanks to the 3-zone climate control, rear passengers have plenty of adjustability to keep themselves cool while gazing out of the optional panoramic roof.
A modern and functional interior.
Up front, the driver gets a panoramic view too, of the 11.9-inch digital gauge cluster and the curved 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display, that is. And if that wasn’t enough screen real estate, there’s even an optional 10.9-inch passenger display to keep the front passenger entertained and involved.
Your neighbours might go green with envy.
Upgrade to the Edition 1 variant of the Q5 Sportback, and you’ll receive even more goodies as standard in the cabin, like a heads-up display, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, enhanced ambient lighting, faster charging speeds from the USB ports, and the aforementioned passenger display.
515 litres of boot space normally or up to 1,415 litres with the rear seats folded.
Driving the Q5 Sportback is a refined experience with creamy power delivery and expectedly good insulation from the outside world. The ride quality is equally as polished, with well-controlled damping that doesn’t jiggle the occupants around and keeps the car feeling rock solid, even during spirited cornering or high-speed cruising.

The steering is light and makes it easy to place the car on the road, while the 360° camera makes the rather-wide Q5 not nearly as difficult to park or manoeuvre through tight spaces as you might think. The car can even park itself, thanks to the latest generation of driver assistance systems like Park Assist, Adaptive Driving Assistant, Active Front Assist, and more, that come as standard on all Q5s.
The Q5 is a well-mixed cocktail of all the ingredients that consumers have come to love and expect from Audi. Robust build quality, solid design, modern tech, and a refined driving experience, all neatly blended together.
