A sinkhole on 26 July 2025 caused a section of Tanjong Katong South Road in Singapore to close, and it will remain closed to traffic until the area is safe again. Goh Pei Ming, Member of Parliament (MP) for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC (Group Representation Constituency), said that there is no reopening date yet.

The road will only reopen after two things are done:

  1. The sinkhole must be completely filled.

  2. Safety scans must show that the ground is strong and safe.

What Is a sinkhole?

A sinkhole is a hole in the ground that could suddenly appear. It can happen when:

  • Underground pipes leak or break.

  • Rainwater causes the soil underneath to wash away.

  • Heavy construction weakens the ground.

Sinkholes can be dangerous. That is why the road in question is closed until it is repaired properly.

Why the affected section of Tanjong Katong Road South is still closed

MP Goh Pei Ming explained that safety comes first. The road will only be reopened after the following is completed:

  • Workers must fill the sinkhole properly.

  • Experts must use machines to scan the ground for any other weak spots.

How this affects drivers

Because of the road closure:

  • Drivers must take longer routes to get to their destinations.

  • Traffic would become heavier in nearby areas.

  • Some people may face delays going to work or school
