Land Transport Authority (LTA) has kicked in stricter safe distancing measurements for private-hire and taxi sectors, including the suspension of commercial carpooling services.

The stringent measures aim to minimise the spread of COVID-19 transmission for passengers commuting by taxis or private hire cars (PHCs) in Singapore from 16 May till 13 June 2021.

Here are the following safe distancing guidelines rolled out by LTA:

Limited Passengers for Taxis and PHCs

The updated social gatherings of up to two from different households rule also apply to commuters taking taxis and PHCs.

However, more than two passengers can travel together in a taxi or PHC if they come from the same household. For example, a parent can travel with his or her two children if they live together.

Commercial point-to-point operators such as Grab and RydePool have terminated their carpooling services from now till 13 June 2021. It involves drivers receiving payment for ferrying passengers while en-route to their destination.

Non-commercial carpooling trips are allowed among friends or colleagues if two people's prevailing permissible group size is adhered to. For instance, if a group of colleagues is travelling together, they must split into groups of not more than two.

Members of the public who come across individuals providing illegal car-pooling services should notify LTA through the OneMotoring portal using the e-service, “Report Vehicle-Related Offences”.

Drivers and passengers are also reminded to wear a mask at all times. Taxi and private-hire drivers will have the right to decline passengers who do not wear masks.

Drivers should also continue to adhere to the prevailing safe management measures such as maintaining good personal hygiene and see a doctor if feeling unwell.
