5 things they don't teach you in driving school

Passing your driving test is a huge milestone, but it's only the start of your journey as a driver.

You won't know every road, and that's okay

No matter how many lessons you've had, there will always be unfamiliar roads, confusing junctions and last-minute lane changes.

Missing an exit or taking the wrong turn happens to everyone, including experienced drivers.

Instead of making a risky lane change or sudden turn, stay calm, continue driving safely and let your navigation guide you to the next available route.

Sometimes, taking the longer route is the safer choice.

Parking is much harder without the cones

Parallel parking between two cones during your driving test is one thing.

Parking between two expensive cars in a crowded shopping mall on a Saturday afternoon is something else entirely.

Real-life parking requires patience, awareness and confidence. Don't feel pressured by drivers waiting behind you. Take your time, make the necessary adjustments and park safely.

You can't predict what other drivers will do

Driving school teaches you the rules.

Real life teaches you that not everyone follows them.

You'll encounter drivers who forget to signal, brake unexpectedly or change lanes without much warning. Rather than assuming everyone will do the right thing, always leave enough space and be prepared for the unexpected.

Courtesy goes a long way

Some of the best driving habits aren't found in the Highway Code.

Letting another car merge during heavy traffic, giving a quick wave to say thank you or simply being patient with a nervous driver can make everyone's journey a little smoother.

Being a good driver isn't just about technical skill. It's also about showing consideration to others on the road.

Confidence comes with experience, not your licence

Passing your driving test doesn't instantly make you an experienced driver.

Your first solo drive, your first time driving in heavy rain, your first trip across the Causeway and your first attempt at navigating a busy multi-storey car park will all teach you something new.
