Car names that play the beautiful game - and the players they represent

Car names that match football terms, and the football players they remind us of.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup, we have witnessed the top footballing talents from all over the world converge in North America, battling it out for the prestigious title.
When seeing football terms like defence and goals while looking at statistics on your screen, cars rarely come to mind, if they ever pop up in your thoughts at all. However, there are some cars whose model names score with football fans.

NISSAN KICKS
This is a punchy, vibrant subcompact crossover engineered specifically for the urban jungle. With its sharp handling, it is built to zip through the tight city roads, manoeuvring through traffic like the best wingers dribbling past defenders.
Nissan kicked off with the original Kicks prototype at the 2014 Sao Paulo Motor Show, where the design of the concept car was said to be inspired by the streets of Brazil. It is therefore natural to think of the Brazilian star Vinicius Jr as a player to match the 2026 Kicks.
Just like how the car weaves through congested lanes, Vini Jr uses his explosive acceleration and flashy skill moves to slice through crowded penalty boxes. After all, you cannot talk about “Kicks” without world-class footwork.

DACIA STRIKER
A playmaker like Vinicius is often complemented by a striker to put the goals in the back of the net. The Dacia Striker is a no-nonsense car that hits the target with ease. Blending the qualities of a SUV, wagon and saloon, it is designed to be tough, versatile and sleek, which also apply to a top-level striker in this day and age.
These are the same qualities possessed by Kylian Mbappe, one of the world’s best strikers in the current era. With his electric pace and clinical finishing, the French striker is a statement player and a benchmark for more modern footballers, just like the Dacia Striker is to the automotive world.

LAND ROVER DEFENDER
No team is complete without a solid defence. The Land Rover Defender lives up to its name. Imposing, structurally massive, and premium from bumper to bumper, it features an all-terrain drivetrain system designed to handle mud, rocks, and deep water without losing its composure.
Staring down a Defender on the highway feels exactly like a striker running head-first into a prime Virgil van Dijk block. The defender in the Dutch national team is the ultimate brick wall - cool, calm, physically dominant and unshakeable. The Defender in England’s Land Rover team is no different.

DATSUN GO
“Goal!” is the term that dominates all football discussions. The Datsun Go sounds like the word “goal” and is therefore fitting in the football context. The Go is a lightweight hatchback praised for its momentum and agility, attributes which every dedicated goalscorer needs.
When it comes to goals, there are many players you could mention, but none quite holds the goal-scoring stature that Argentine winger Lionel Messi and Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo have.
Both players have scored over 900 goals for club and country, with Ronaldo’s record almost at a thousand. Clearly, these highly driven footballers have what it takes to “go” for the goal and leave the opposition behind.
