Lexus and Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) unveil the Lexus LFA Concept, GR GT3, and GR GT, ushering in a new era of Japanese super sports cars.

Enthusiasts requesting a new flagship sports car by Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) have been blessed by the automotive giant, with the newly released GR GT and Lexus LFA Concept poised to follow the footsteps of the legendary Toyota 2000GT and original Lexus LFA, respectively.

The three cars unveiled are TGR's GR GT and GR GT3, and Lexus' LFA Concept.

Following the company's ethos of "Toyota's Shikinen Sengu" – the belief that certain car-making techniques and skills must be preserved and passed on to the next generation – each model is developed together under a shared philosophy centred on the three fundamental elements of low centre of gravity, low weight with high rigidity, and aerodynamic performance.

All three cars will share a similar platform, evidenced by identical wheelbase figures, and will also share core components such as the aluminium frame between the Lexus and GR models.

The Lexus LFA Concept is a battery-electric (BEV) sports car concept previously named the Sport Concept. Lexus sees the LFA name as one that isn't bound to internal combustion engines.

In addition to the BEV powertrain, the LFA Concept also features a cockpit inspired by a minimalist worldview with mechanical design woven into it.

Full details about specifications are yet to be released for the LFA Concept, but Lexus aims for the LFA to be a BEV sports car that exceeds customer expectations.

The GR GT is a hybrid sports car intended to also serve as a flagship for TGR. Quoted development targets are to produce 640hp and 850Nm, courtesy of a 4-litre, twin-turbo V8 with hybrid assistance, while weighing not more than 1750 kilograms.

The GR GT3 is based on the GR GT, meeting the required specifications for the GT3 race car category with necessary changes like aerodynamic improvements, as well as a support system for customers using the GT3 in various racing series.

The GR GT features Toyota's first all-aluminium body frame, combined with extensive use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) and other materials to create a strong yet lightweight body.

Aerodynamic performance was prioritised first before exterior styling was considered, detracting from Toyota's normal process of finalising styling before looking at aerodynamics.

Interior styling for the GR GT was also centred towards giving drivers an optimal driving position akin to a professional driver's, while ensuring usability for daily driving.

Both the GR GT and GR GT3 are planned to be officially launched for consumers around 2027, while the Lexus LFA concept does not have an official release date.
