$290k in fines: 3,100 S'pore drivers caught without VEP in Johor
A recent enforcement blitz in Johor saw over 3,100 Singaporean drivers slapped with summonses, amounting to a staggering S$290,000 in fines.
The reason? Driving into Malaysia without a mandatory Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) tag.
Malaysian authorities are no longer lenient. A trip across the Causeway for shopping or food can now end with a hefty fine if you are unprepared. The VEP-RFID tag is mandatory for all foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia from Singapore. Here’s how to avoid being next.
Your 3-Step VEP Checklist
Don't get caught out. Follow these essential steps before you drive to Malaysia:
Apply Online: You can register directly on the official JPJ portal. For added convenience, you can also apply through the Touch 'n Go eWallet. Simply install the app, tap 'More', and find the 'VEP JPJ ' icon under the 'Transport' section to start your registration. Remember, this must be done before your trip; you cannot apply at the checkpoint.
Install the Tag: After your application is approved, book an appointment in Johor Bahru to collect and have your VEP-RFID tag professionally installed on your windscreen.
Link & Top-Up: Connect your VEP tag to your Touch 'n Go eWallet. Ensure you have sufficient balance to pay the RM20 Road Charge upon entry and any tolls.
