World Car-Free Day, better known as “Car-Free Sunday”, is on 22 September 2019; but what fun things can we do on a day without using our cars? Here’s a list of things to do this coming Sunday.

World Car-Free Day is quickly approaching us on 22 September 2019. Although it is a day celebrated internationally, Singapore has its own twist on it. Perhaps you have heard of a ‘Car-Free Weekend’, an event organised by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).

There have been several ‘Car-Free Weekends’ this year, celebrated in March and more recently, in August. URA is organizing yet another event on the 25, 26 and 27 October 2019 at the Civic District and Telok Ayer, which you can find more information about on their Facebook page.

However, there is nothing scheduled for the actual Car-Free Day, so here’s a list of fun things you and your family can engage in without having to use your car!

1. Take a Walk in the Park

This might sound very simple, but it’s a fun activity you can do alone to unwind, or a way to spend time with your family. Head to a park near your house or hop on public transport and travel a little further to parks like the Botanic Gardens!

Walking is a good form of exercise, and it helps to stretch your legs after driving in a vehicle all week. Being around nature will help to clear your head from work stress, as well as boost your physical and mental health.

Using your vehicle all week can also tire it out, so it’s a good idea to let it rest at home for a weekend.

2. Make a Trip Down to Sentosa

You may be used to paying S$6 for admission into the island by car, but have you ever wanted to go in for free? Well, if you enter the island via the Sentosa Boardwalk, you can enter the island for free!

The Boardwalk is scattered with booths that sell a variety of items, such as souvenirs and ice cream, and you would be able to enjoy the wonderful island breeze as you walked down to Sentosa.

Once you’ve reached, there’s a plethora of activities that you and your family can enjoy, such as going to the beach, skydiving and more!

3. Go Biking

This is another great form of exercise! Stretch out your limbs by riding your bicycle around the streets of Singapore. You may ride in the aforementioned parks, or just take a simple route around your estate.

Don’t have a bike? SG Bike is a local bicycle sharing company where you can rent bikes from. Just download the SG Bike App, top up your e-wallet and you’re good to go! You can find out more about this scheme on SG Bike’s website.

4. Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival

With the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations coming to an end, why not travel down to Chinatown to see the ‘Street Light-Up’ before it’s gone?

This event runs until 28 September 2019, from 7 pm to 12 midnight (Sunday to Thursday). The story of the last 200 years of Singapore is told through decorations and lanterns lining the streets of Chinatown.

As the event takes place on the roads, public transport is highly encouraged, which makes this the perfect event for Car-Free Day!

5. Have a Car Maintenance Day

It’s possible that after a long week at work, you may feel too tired to travel out and prefer to stay in the comforts of your home. But if you feel unproductive, why not run a quick check on your vehicle to make sure that it’s running smoothly?

Sometimes, you may not realize a part of your car could be clogged or worn out; taking this Car-Free Day to make sure that everything is up-to-date is a great way to spend your time.

This Car-Free Day is a good day to just unwind and relax, as well as to let your vehicle rest. Remember to check out Car-Free Sunday SG’s Facebook page for updates on the ‘Car-Free Weekend’ if you’re interested!
