From October 2019 onwards, all vehicles from Singapore entering Malaysia will be required to register for a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP). Here’s a handy guide on how to apply for one.

A VEP refers to a permit required by foreign vehicles when entering another country. Earlier in April this year, the Malaysian Transport Ministry announced that they planned to implement the enforcement of VEP at all checkpoints. If you are entering Malaysia with a vehicle, it will need to be tagged with a VEP-RFID tag.

The law requiring that all vehicles be outfitted with a VEP-RFID tag will be coming into full effect from October 2019 onwards. Any vehicle caught without the VEP-RFID tag will be fined for a penalty of RM150 (approx. S$50). Thus, it is vital to start applying for a VEP if you have not already done so.

The application process for a VEP also does take up quite a bit of time, therefore, it would be best to get started before October 2019. If you’re unsure on how to apply for a VEP, don’t worry – we here at Motorist have you covered. Here’s an easy, step-by-step guide on how to apply for a Malaysian VEP.


Step One: Register At The Official VEP Portal

There is only one way of registering for a VEP and that is online, through the official VEP portal. As of date, there are no other ways of registering for a VEP, as application can only be done strictly online. The application process is very simple, as long as you follow all the instructions provided on the portal.

The portal requires you to create an account before you start the application process. This account can be used to view any updates on the status of your application, as well as booking an appointment for the collection of or renewal of the VEP-RFID tag. Thus, do ensure you remember your account details to avoid any hassle.

The application form of the VEP will require your own personal details as well as your vehicle information. To avoid filling in the application form manually, simply upload the PDF file of your car registration. The aforementioned PDF file can be downloaded from the official LTA website of OneMotoring. Once your registration is successful, you’ll receive a confirmation email.

Additionally, for drivers who do not wish to login to OneMotoring using their SingPass, our Motorist App is a useful alternative. You can view any vehicle information you need on our app itself. If your vehicle is registered under someone else, you will also be able to view any vehicle details you require on the Motorist App.


Step Two: Download The Touch N' Go eWallet

While waiting for the confirmation email, download and set up your Touch N' Go eWallet, which is available on both Apple and Google App stores. This Touch N' Go ewallet will be useful as it is linked to the VEP-RFID tag upon collection. In addition, the eWallet automatically pays your road charge.

Do be careful when selecting the ID type in your eWallet, as selecting wrongly may cause your eWallet and VEP to be mismatched. This mismatch may result in you not obtaining your VEP-RFID tag. On the occasion that you accidentally choose the wrong ID type, you’ll need to create another account to change it. For Singaporeans, you should be choosing NRIC as the ID type in the Touch N' Go eWallet. For Permanent Residents (PRs) or foreigners, you should choose passport as the ID type.


Step Three: Make An Appointment To Collect The VEP-RFID Tag

After receiving the confirmation email, you’ll have to make an appointment on the official VEP portal to tag your vehicle by booking a slot at four available locations in Johor Bahru. These four locations are as follows: Pandan R&R, Gelang Patah Southbound R&R, Angsana Open Carpark C, Lima Kedai Toll Plaza. Padan R&R and Angsana Open Carpark C are located near Woodlands Checkpoint, while Gelang Patah Southbound R&R and Lima Kedai Toll Plaza are closer to Tuas Checkpoint.

Although the email will list these four locations as possible areas at which you can collect your VEP-RFID tag, this may not be the case as some slots may already be full. There are reportedly only two locations available most of the time. Therefore it is imperative you keep your schedule free and options open to ensure that the slots will be convenient enough for you.

After booking an appointment, you will receive an ‘Invite to Appointment’ email. This email will contain your VEP-RFID tag appointment slip that you’ll have to bring along for the appointment during which your vehicle will be tagged with the VEP-RFID tag.

Step Four: Go To Your Appointment For Collection Of The VEP-RFID Tag

The collection point of your VEP-RFID tag will not be at any office or building, but instead at container booths as seen in the image above. Once you collect your queue number, you will have to wait for it to be called before your vehicle can be tagged. As you will have to drive your vehicle over to tag it, ensure that it is parked in a spot that is easily accessible and not blocked by other cars.

The required documents for the collection of the VEP-RFID tag are as follows: VEP confirmation slip, VEP-RFID tag appointment slip, a photocopy of your passport, a copy of your latest insurance cover note and the registration documents of your vehicle that were issued by the LTA. Some locations like Gelang Patah Southbound R&R may hold on to your documents, while others will return them to you straight away.

The VEP-RFID tag costs RM10 (approx S$3.30) and is valid for five years. It will be checked over by officials to see if it is functioning properly. While the tag is usually attached to the windshield (see image below), they may attach it to the headlamp for certain cars. Therefore if you have any concerns regarding the placement of the tag, do not hesitate to raise it up with them. The appointment should not take longer than two hours.

all appointment slot in Sept is fully booked? Where and how t make appointment to collect the tag before Sept. Will Malaysia still fine those who has already registered but cannot make appointment?

Hi Jam, I believe many people are in the same predicament as you. If you already have the VEP confirmation slip, you should be safe if you intend to drive to MY after October 1.
