Heavy traffic is to be expected for travellers entering Singapore via the land checkpoints due to enhanced security checks.

“Travellers should expect delays at the checkpoints due to enhanced checks and factor in additional time needed for immigration clearance,” the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in a Facebook post on Sunday, 19 May.

Immense traffic at both the Causeway and Second Link resulted in crossing times from three to four hours to enter Woodlands Checkpoint and two to three hours to enter Tuas Checkpoint, according to the checkpoints feature on the Motorist app.

Public bus services 160 and 170/170X were also delayed due to heavy traffic along the Causeway, according to a post by SBS Transit on X (formerly Twitter).

The increased security checks follow the attack on a police station in Ulu Tiram, Johor on 17 May that resulted in the deaths of two Malaysian police officers.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) also announced the step up in security measures at checkpoints in response to the heightened threat situation. These measures include increased patrols and enhanced checks on travellers.

ICA released a statement at 12:50pm, Monday, 20 May, saying that heavy arrival traffic at Woodlands Checkpoint has subsided. At the same time, the Motorist app’s checkpoints feature estimates a crossing time of one to one and a half hours at both Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints.

In light of the heightened security measures and upcoming Vesak Day public holiday, travellers are encouraged to check traffic conditions before embarking on their journey.
