It’s that time of the year again, the Singapore F1 Grand Prix Night Race is upon us for the 11th year in a row.
With the first chequered flag dropping in 2008, the Formula 1 (F1) race has filled Singapore with the whine of F1 cars, the world’s best race car drivers, the most popular musical artists, tourists and press from across the world over one long weekend.
Last year, there were some whispers that the F1 contract would not be renewed after its 10th edition due to rising costs and declining ticket sales. However, it has since been renewed for another four years to 2021.
Former Minister for Trade and Industry S Iswaran praised the F1 night race by saying, “Formula One had helped boost Singapore's image as a vibrant and innovative city. And the race had yielded significant economic benefits”.
As it is a street circuit in the heart of Singapore, roads around the Marina Centre Area will be closed from today and will be reopened progressively until 18 September, 5.30am. However, these roads would be re-opened during peak hours.

Carparks at Suntec City, Millenia Singapore and Marina Square will remain open. Motorists should follow the instructions of road signs and traffic wardens on-site.
5. Public Transport
Those going to the Marina Centre area to enjoy the F1 race are highly encouraged to take public transport. The area is really convenient to access by MRT, as every part of the track is within walking distance of an MRT station.
Alternatively, there will be a shuttle bus to bring commuters to Gate 1 of the race track from Lavender MRT.
During the race weekend, MRT services will be extended to cope with the increased foot traffic. The last train from City Hall MRT station will leave at 12.30am on Fridays and Saturday, and 12.45am on Sunday.
