The all-new BMW 5 Series is now in Singapore, and it's now even bigger, smarter, and more efficient than ever before.

We were granted early access to the latest model recently, and were shown two variants of the 5 Series that will be available to Singapore customers: the petrol-powered 520i and the electric i5, in Launch Edition and eDrive40 M Sport guises respectively.

BMW's iconic executive saloon has grown considerably in size over its G30-generation predecessor, now measuring at over five metres at length (versus 4.9 metres). This means that it has essentially closed the gap with the G11-generation 7 Series. It also translates to a longer wheelbase on the new 5er (2,995 mm versus 2,975 mm on the G30), which makes for a more spacious rear cabin experience.

It's also wider and taller than ever before, now 1,900 mm in width and 1,515 mm in height (versus 1,868 mm and 1,479 mm respectively on the G30).

Other visual features new to the 2024 5 Series include illuminated surrounds for the enlarged kidney grille, 7 Series-like tapered LED tail lights, and an embossed "5" logo on the Hofmeister kink. The Launch Edition for both powertrains will also come with unique Titanium Bronze finishes for the exterior trim pieces, 20-inch wheels, and interior.

Customers will get the choice of either a 2.0L turbo straight-four with 190 hp & 310 Nm of torque for the 520i, or an 81 kWh battery delivering 340 hp & 400 Nm of torque for the i5 eDrive40. The 520i does 0-100 km/h in 8.1 seconds and has a top speed of 230 km/h. The i5 eDrive40 completes in century sprint in 6.0 seconds, with a top speed of 193 km/h.

A more radical i5 M60 is also slated to arrive early next year, gaining an additional motor at the front, providing 601 hp & 795 Nm of torque. With almost double the power and an AWD setup, it goes from 0-100 km/h in a supercar-like 3.8 seconds, and tops out at 230 km/h. It has an estimated WLTP range of up to 516 km, while the eDrive40 has a more generous estimate of up to 582 km.

The M Sport variant for both the 520i and i5 will also come with a sportier suspension setup, along with a more aggressive bodykit and trim, including a flat-bottom three-spoke steering wheel instead of a two-spoke one.

It's brainier now too, with BMW Operating System 8.5 running on the Curved Display setup that can be found inside many modern Beemers. The 14.9-inch central screen blends together seamlessly with the 12.3-inch digital display for the driver to provide a panoramic info panel, and now come with all-new functions.

QuickSelect, for example, allows users to jump straight into specific functions or settings without entering layers of submenus. There is an interior camera mounted on the headliner, allowing occupants to take photos or "selfies". It also doubles as a security feature once the car is parked, and can be accessed remotely.

The new 5 Series also gains what the brand calls the BMW Interaction Bar, which features touch-based controls atop a backlit panel that stretches across the entire dashboard. It has fully customisable colour options that can be adjusted on the fly, and a crystalline surface that is also found on the new G70-generation 7 Series.

Four colour options will be available for the standard Veganza upholstery: black, espresso brown, burgundy, and smoke white. It's supposed to be a fully-vegan material that mimics the qualities of leather without the environmental impact. If you must have the real deal, however, the marque will offer the high-end Merino leather upholstery as a BMW Individual option, with three colours to choose from.
