Malaysia, Johor Bahru, 3 August 2025 — Almost 1,500 Singapore car owners have been issued with summonses in Malaysia since 1 July 2025 for not following the country's Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) rules. The total fines now total more than RM500,000 (about S$150,000).

Malaysia now fully checks all foreign cars entering at the border. If your car does not have a VEP tag, or the tag is not active, you will be fined RM150 every time you enter.

Why were drivers fined?

Many Singapore drivers were caught because they:

  • Did not install the VEP RFID tag.

  • Did not activate the VEP RFID tag.

  • Had wrong car details.

  • Entered Malaysia without registering their vehicle.

Where are the checks conducted?

VEP-related checks are done at land checkpoints, especially in Johor Bahru. Officers use scanners and cameras to catch vehicles without valid VEP tags.

How to avoid getting fined for VEP violations

Before entering Malaysia, make sure you:

  • Register at the official JPJ VEP portal.

  • Install the VEP RFID tag on your windscreen.

  • Activate your VEP tag online.

  • Check your details are correct

  • Top up your Touch 'n Go (TnG) eWallet.

What happens if you ignore the VEP summons?

If you keep entering Malaysia without fixing the issue:

  • You may get more fines.

  • Your car might be blocked at the border.

  • Legal action could be taken.
