The demerit points and composition fines for speeding in Singapore will be increased significantly to deter dangerous driving and improve road safety.

This move was initially announced in February 2025 by the Minister for Home Affairs (MHA), K Shanmugan, at Traffic Police (TP) Road Safety Day, to better reflect the severity of speeding offences in Singapore and their potential consequences.

According to MHA, there was a 43.8 percent increase in speeding-related fatal accidents, from 32 cases in 2023 to 46 cases in 2024. The number of speeding violations reached a 10-year high of almost 192,000 in 2024, which was an increase of 64.8 percent compared to 2023. This means an average of over 500 speeding violations per day on the road.

The baseline penalty, for exceeding the road/vehicular speed limit by up to 20 km/h, will increase - from 4 demerit points and $150 for light vehicles (with a maximum laden weight of up to 3,500 kg, such as most passenger cars and commercial vans), to 6 demerit points and $200.

Drivers of heavy vehicles (with a maximum laden weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes, such as large lorries and tipper trucks) will face a costlier baseline fine for speeding - from $200 and 4 demerit points, to $250 and 6 demerit points.

Here is a summary of the heavier penalties for speeding offences in Singapore which will take effect from 1 January 2026:
