Malaysia to start VEP enforcement for Singapore vehicles from 1 July 2025
Singapore-registered vehicles driven into Malaysia without a valid VEP (Vehicle Entry Permit) will receive a compound fine of RM300 (S$91).
According to a Straits Times report, Malaysia’s transport minister Anthony Loke announced the bad news at a Transport Ministry press conference in Putrajaya - “Foreign vehicle owners issued with a summons for not having a valid VEP must settle the fine before exiting Malaysia.”
He also said that these motorists have to register for VEP before leaving the country, and that ample time had been given since May 2024 for owners of foreign-registered private vehicles to register for their VEP before driving from Singapore into Malaysia.
He revealed that about 231,000 Singapore-registered private vehicles are in Malaysia’s VEP system so far, but more than 34,000 of these have not activated their RFID tags.
Each radio frequency identification tag allows the Malaysian authorities to identify foreign-registered vehicles on the country’s roads and track them for any outstanding fines and traffic offences, which must be settled before they are driven out of Malaysia.
The implementation of the VEP system was shelved in 2019 and 2020, and delayed from 1 October 2024 when Malaysia’s JPJ (Road Transport Department) stated that Singapore vehicles would be able to enter and exit Malaysia as usual, with warning notices issued to the motorists if they had not installed their VEP yet.
