We recently went to Auto Shanghai with Omoda & Jaecoo to see what they have in store for the near and not-so-near future.

Auto Shanghai is Shanghai’s biennial motorshow and the oldest auto exhibition in China. With how prevalent Chinese brands are in the car industry today, Auto Shanghai has become one of the premier international auto shows in the world, right up there with your Detroits and Frankfurts.

This year, we attended the show with Omoda & Jaecoo (O&J) Singapore who brought us around to show us all of the new stuff that they and their parent group, Chery, had to offer. Across its entire brand portfolio, Chery Group unveiled 53 new models at the show, three of which fall under the O&J name.

All three of O&J’s new models are what’s called New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), a term used by Chinese brands to denote any car fully or partially powered by electricity, including plug-in hybrids and range-extender electric vehicles.

Of the three new O&J cars, two will be coming to Singapore later this year, namely the Omoda C7 SHS and Jaecoo J5 EV.

The Omoda C7 is a mid-size SUV that bears some resemblance to the already-in-Singapore Omoda E5, especially in the front fascia area. It’s a fair lick bigger than the E5, though, with lots more space on the similar but fresher interior.

Information on the powertrain was not divulged other than that it’ll be sold here with a Category B COE, but the SHS (stands for Super Hybrid System) badge leads this writer to believe that it’ll be similar to what’s currently in the Jaecoo J7 SUV that’s available locally.

We drove the Jaecoo J7 Super Hybrid a little while back and were thoroughly impressed by its efficiency and smoothness, check out that travel story here

On the Jaecoo side of the fence, they revealed the new J5 EV, a compact electric SUV positioned below the J7 in their model lineup. Unlike the plug-in hybrid J7, the J5 is fully electric with a single electric motor on the front axle that will make it eligible for a Category A COE when it goes on sale.

Its appearance is very similar to that of the J7, save for the front grille thats been deleted since the EV doesn’t need one. The interior is almost exactly the same as the J7’s as well, with a clean and uncluttered layout dominated by the centre touchscreen.

Both the Omoda C7 and the Jaecoo J5 are scheduled to launch in Singapore in Q4 2025, with pricing information to be announced in due course.
